*Julia Howe 是一位著名的廢奴論者、詩人、婦女参政主義者和人道主義者。有天她和丈夫到華盛頓訪問，而在前一天，他們看到波托馬克河南面軍隊的調遣，並和士兵們一起唱"John Brown's Body"。有朋友建議她為這支行軍歌寫新歌詞。當晚，她一躺下就有靈感，擔心醒後忘記，便立即找筆和紙，寫一口氣寫下"The Battle Hymn of the Republic"，她覺得這是她寫作以來最好的作品。
